Some history about the cocktail shaker

The cocktail shaker can be traced to 7000 BCE in prehispanic Mexico and South America. The jar gourd was used as a closed container. In 1520, Cortés wrote to King Charles V of Spain of a drink made from cacao, served to Montezuma with much reverence from a golden cylinder. Egyptians as long ago as 3500 BCE added spices to their fermented grain drinks.

By the mid-19th century, the cocktail shaker as we now know it was in wide use, invented by an innkeeper who, while using two containers to pour drinks back and forth between, noticed that one container’s mouth was smaller than the other’s and held the two together and shook them “for a bit of a show”. Rapid design advancement occurred during the late 19th century, with several patent improvements occurring during the 1870s and 1880s (see Patent history below), including the addition of integral strainer mechanisms to shakers.

During the 1920s prohibition era in the United States, cocktail shakers were produced in many different shapes and designs, including shakers that looked like penguins, zeppelins, lighthouses and airplanes. Cocktail shaker skills and drink rituals became as important in the Jazz Age lifestyle as knowing the latest dance step. It was after prohibition however, that cocktail shakers really reached their zenith of popularity. They appeared in movies, and were associated with the glamorous lives of movie stars. Cocktail shakers became de rigueur symbols of sophistication and symbols of the good life.

In 1941, the era of the cocktail shaker faltered seriously, as the United States entered World War II and all non-essential uses of metal were redirected towards the war effort. The same companies and equipment formerly used to manufacture cocktail shakers were used to make artillery shells and other war materials.

Is there a difference between a brooch and a pin?

Technically speaking, pins and brooches are both decorative pieces of jewelry that attach to clothing with a sharpened metal wire on the back. However, pins are the general category for such pieces of jewelry, and brooches are a specific type of pin. So, all brooches are pins, but all pins are not brooches.

What is design?

Design history is the study of objects of design in their historical and stylistic contexts.

With a broad definition, the contexts of design history include the social, the cultural, the economic, the political, the technical and the aesthetic. Design history has as its objects of study all designed objects including those of architecture, fashion, crafts, interiors, textiles, graphic design, industrial design and product design.

Design history has had to incorporate criticism of the ‘heroic’ structure of its discipline, in response to the establishment of material culture, much as art history has had to respond to visual culture, (although visual culture has been able to broaden the subject area of art history through the incorporation of the televisual, film and new media). Design history has done this by shifting its focus towards the acts of production and consumption. This product cocktail shaker design necklace is inspired by modern jewelry design.

What is a necklace?

A necklace is an article of jewellery that is worn around the neck. Necklaces may have been one of the earliest types of adornment worn by humans. They often serve ceremonial, religious, magical, or funerary purposes and are also used as symbols of wealth and status, given that they are commonly made of precious metals and stones.

The main component of a necklace is the band, chain, or cord that wraps around the neck. These are most often rendered in precious metals such as gold, silver, and platinum. Necklaces often have additional attachments suspended or inset into the necklace itself. These attachments typically include pendants, lockets, amulets, crosses, and precious and semi-precious materials such as diamond, pearls, rubies, emeralds, garnets, and sapphires. They are made with many different type of materials and are used for many things and sometimes classed as clothing.

This necklace so called ” cocktail shaker design necklace ” is inspired by modern jewelry design.

What is a cocktail shaker?

Which colour jewelry suits you best?

If you have fair skin with red undertones, you may want to stay away from rose gold as it accentuate the pink undertones of your skin. Always go for silver jewelry! It will make you glow beautifully.

If you are slightly tanned with olive or mediterranean skin, you could wear almost any metal and it well flatter you amazingly!

If you have a dark skin tone go for the gold option. It will look striking and really glowy on you. Same goes with pale asian skin tones.

How to store your jewellery

Store your jewelry away from direct sunlight and heat, in a protective (lined) jewellery box or a tarnish-resistant pouch.

By no means should you store your jewelry in the bathroom or any other humid places.

What is a pendant?

A pendant is a loose-hanging piece of jewellery, generally attached by a small loop to a necklace, which may be known as a “pendant necklace. A pendant earring is an earring with a piece hanging down. Its name stems from the Latin word pendere and Old French word pendre, both of which translate to “to hang down”. In modern French, pendant is the gerund form of pendre (” to hang”). The extent to which the design of a pendant can be incorporated into an overall necklace makes it not always accurate to treat them as separate items.

In some cases, though, the separation between necklace and pendant is far clearer.

What is a bartender?

A bartender (also known as a barkeep, barman, barmaid, bar chef, tapster, mixologist, alcohol server, cocktologist, flairman or an alcohol chef) is a person who formulates and serves alcoholic or soft drink beverages behind the bar.

A bartender’s job decription also usually includes of takinc care of and maintaing the supplies and inventory for the bar. Some classic cocktails a bartender should be able to do are: Cosmopolitan, Manhattan, Old Fashioned, and Mojito.

Another thing a bartender is responsible for is confirming that customers meet the legal drinking age requirements before serving them alcoholic beverages.

In certain countries, such as Canada, the United Kingdom, and Sweden, bartenders are legally required to refuse more alcohol to drunk customers.

Historically, bartending was a profession with a low reputation. It was perceived through the lens of ethical issues and various legal constraints as well as biases that were strongly connected with serving alcolol.

Bartending became a serious and mainstream profession at the end of the 19th century, due to the contribution of “Professor” Jerry Thomas.

He was the one who managed to establish the image of the bartender as a creative professional. Harry Johnson wrote a bartending manual and established the first bar management consulting agency.

At the turn of the 20th century, slightly less than half the bartenders in London were women, such as Ada Coleman.

“Barmaids”, as they were called, were usually the daughters of tradesmen or mechanics or, occasionally, young women from the “better-born” classes who had been “thrown upon their own resources” and needed an income.

The bartending profession was generally a second occupation, used as transitional work for students to gain customer experience or to save money for university fees.

However, this view of bartending as a career is changing around the world and bartending has become a profession by choice rather than a necessity. It includes specialized education — European Bartender School operates in 25 countries.

How to clean your jewelry properly

First of all, pour a small amount of mild soap into lukewarm water and use a small, soft toothbrush to clean your jewellery. If the dirt is hard to remove, soak the jewelry in clean water.

Gold plated jewelry requires more care! Using your toothbrush very intensely may cause the gold plating to fade away, therefore it is very important that you do this process very carefully to avoid the gold plating from wearing away.

Tips on how to take care of your jewelry

All of the jewelry is treated with an anti-tarnish coating to help protect against tarnishing, yet it is still important for you to follow my care instructions.

Your jewellery can tarnish over time when exposed to the open air but you can help maintain your jewellery by following these useful tips:
I recommend that customers remove jewellery before going to bed or participating in physical activity. Exposure to certain harsh chemicals or environments will result in compromising the integrity of your jewellery.

This includes, but is not limited to the following: perspiration, perfumes, cleaning agents, chlorine, salt water, and silver polish.

Specifically, gold-plated jewelry has a thin layer of gold over sterling silver, so when that layer wears down, the base metal is revealed. Below you can find a few suggestions to extend the life of your gold plating.

1)Keep gold-plated jewelry away from hard surfaces. Bumps and scratches will cause the gold layer to wear away faster.

2)Wash your hands before putting on or taking off plated jewelry.

3)Put on gold plated earrings after you’ve applied your perfume.

4)Put on your plated jewelry after you have applied lotion or put on makeup.

5)Don’t swim wearing your plated jewelry.

6)Don’t wear your plated jewelry when you’ll be sweating profusely. Covered later.

How to store your jewelry

Jewellery should be stored away from direct sunlight and heat, in a protective (lined) jewellery box or a tarnish-resistant pouch. Do not store your jewelry in the bathroom or any other humid places.
